We are pleased to announce the appointment of David McCallen as the associate vice president, Laboratory Programs, in the Lab Management Office. David will lead the university’s oversight of the scientific and mission programs at Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National laboratories, as well as other contractual responsibilities to the Department of Energy (DOE) and its National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). David will be joining the university in his new role on January 16.
David has an extensive history with the UC-affiliated national labs as well as the university. He has worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) for 30 years in leadership positions covering a broad range of laboratory programs, including the National Ignition Facility, Nuclear Systems Science and, most recently, Global Security. He currently is the director of the National Security Office reporting to the LLNL director. In addition to LLNL, David also worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab as the program leader for Nuclear Energy Safety Projects within the Earth Sciences Division and is the current chairman of the UC Berkeley Department of Nuclear Engineering Advisory Committee. David received his M.S. and Ph.D. in engineering from UC Davis.
David is uniquely qualified for his new role based on his successful management experience and strong technical credentials in programs relevant to the three UC-affiliated labs, his knowledge of and relationships within the DOE/NNSA community, and his demonstrated ability to build teamwork and collaborations with the academic community, as well as commercial partners and state government.
