The International Workshop on Scattering Techniques for Nuclear Materials intends to bring together current leaders and young professionals utilizing neutron and x-ray scattering techniques to investigate engineering materials, in particular as relevant to nuclear power generation. Talks will encompass structural materials, fuel and fuel cladding. The workshop goals are to showcase the present capabilities, encourage new users, and initiate collaborations, as well as solicit input for desired capabilities at user facilities which we can strive to implement together.
The heyday of irradiated materials research on behalf of the nuclear energy enterprise to a large degree predates the development of large scale neutron and x-ray national user facilities. The deep penetration of neutrons (cm) and high-energy (>30keV) x-rays (mm) in engineering materials provides a non-destructive means of microstructure characterization that eliminates expensive and hazardous sample preparation. Environmental chambers exist at many facilities which facilitate sample containment and enable characterization at temperature. The merits of diffraction, small angle scattering and radiography will all be discussed.
The first day of the workshop will be a full-day tutorial aimed at informing potential users and students of the capabilities and limitations of the nation’s neutron and x-ray user facilities for probing nuclear materials and, in particular, radioactive specimens. The second day will focus on recent, novel, engineering diffraction measurements on structural materials and will honor Dr. Thomas Holden and his contributions to the field of engineering neutron diffraction. The technical session on the third day will focus on scattering measurements on nuclear power relevant materials, including fuels, cladding, and structural materials.
