The Asia-Pacific Forum series provide an annual opportunity for nuclear energy leaders from around the Pacific Rim to exchange timely information and perspectives on recent international developments in nuclear energy from their respective regions. The objective of the series of forums organized, is to bring together the leading world’s experts to establish a framework that could provide the science, technology and policy base for the development, deployment and life-cycle use of nuclear energy and nuclear technology infrastructure that meets global goals for safety, security, sustainability, and economics.
The 5th Asia-Pacific Forum will focus on materials issues in existing commercial and advanced nuclear reactors. We will discuss materials issues in current nuclear power systems (LWRs) including radiation damage and corrosion phenomena as well as advanced nuclear power systems facing higher irradiation doses and extremely corrosive environment. We will identify the materials challenges and potential solutions for the nuclear facilities while introducing state of the art techniques and examples of how material science for nuclear applications is conducted.
The 2nd Annual U.S. DOE-NE Materials Cross-cut Workshop is intended to bring together researchers working on materials issues across different nuclear systems to increase exchange of information and to foster collaboration between complimentary programs. The programs include light water reactor life extension, Generation IV reactor systems, small modular reactors and fuel cycle research and development. The workshop will include overview presentations on the technical issues being addressed by the U.S. DOE programs and breakout sessions on specific technical issues of particular interest.
It is the aim of this joint meeting to bring leading experts in the field of materials science for nuclear application in close contact with the new generation of scientists and students. Our intent is to hold joint technical sessions between the Forum and the Workshop for the areas that overlap. We encourage open and free discussions that might initiate new ideas for addressing current and future materials issues in nuclear application.
The 5th Forum includes participants from USA, China, India, Japan, Korea, France, Belgium, Russia and representatives of the IAEA.
Location: University of California at Berkeley Campus and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
